| "Call
Me." How
could two little words scribbled on a business card drive a normally sane
woman to be so . . . impulsive?
It wasn't Harley Golden's style to call a perfect stranger. But here she was, after one brief airport encounter, having phone sex with the obviously unforgettable Gardner Barnes. What next? Letting him fly her off to Texas in his jet? Falling in love with a man who is already married to a ranch? Getting pregnant . . . ?

CALL ME was the book that saved my life. Okay, saved my sanity. My writing career? Seriously though . . . up until I was stomped on by that insistent muse, I'd convinced myself I could write nothing but long and deep and angsty stories--heavy on the angst. These were the stories I read and enjoyed so these were the stories I should write. Right? Wrong. With CALL ME, I found my voice. Slightly irreverant. (Too much self-expression perhaps?) Definitely stylistic. (Who says you have to write in complete sentences?) Humorous? (Are you kidding?) Multi-layered, with just enough of that angst to satisfy my early cravings. With CALL ME, I also found Harlequin Temptation's editorial Dream Team. (I'm in Houston. Indulge me.) Laura Shin requested the manuscript. Birgit Davis-Todd bought it. Brenda Chin suggested revisions that were dead-on. And my current editor, Susan Sheppard, did line edits before sending my baby out into the world. (Susan returned said line edits to me with a note that said I had to write a book starring the hero's brother. But that's another story. In fact, it's called THE HEARTBREAK KID!) Every author should be so blessed. Talk about the experience of a lifetime. But I shouldn't have been surprised. The book wrote itself. From day one the stars were in perfect alignment, every duck was in his row. How else can I explain the incredible good fortune of being in the right place at the right time, or the luck of the draw that selected CALL ME as THE BOOK purchased live on the CBS 48 Hours episode entitled "Isn't It Romantic?" The episode aired in October of 1995. But the fun began in May of that year with the surprising out-of-the-blue phone call from the producer and continued through my own 48 hours of tv cameras and mikes in my home, my car, my workplace, etc. Again, another story. Or in this case . . . another video to show my grandchildren . . . should I spare my children's lives long enough for them to bless me with any . . . |
